Quinny pulls out of U.S.A. friendly.

Niall Quinn has been withdrawn from the Republic of Ireland squad after suffering a neck injury in Sunderland's defeat against Liverpool yesterday. The Reds beat the Black Cats by a Michael Owen lob over keeper Sorenson, at the Stadium of Light, in Wearside

The big striker will miss Ireland's friendly against the USA in Dublin on Wednesday and faces a battle to recover in time to play for the Black Cats at West Ham next weekend. Sunderland are now desperate for points to remain in top flight football, having only won 1 out of the last 4 premiership games.

Quinn, who is almost certain to be involved in someway Mick McCarthy's squad for this summer's World Cup finals, has started in Sunderland's last three games, and was brought on as substitution for the game away to Arsenal, when Cameroon international Mboma agitated a knee injury.

As it stands Quinny undergoes therapy for his bad back a couple of times a week, however the 35-year-old will receive round-the-clock treatment in a bid to be fit for Saturday's crucial game at Upton Park. Meanwhile the other two first team Black Cats, Jason McAteer and Kevin Kilbane today linked up with the Ireland squad for the World Cup warm-up game.

Roy Keane (Ham-string), Niall Quinn (Neck), Richard Sadlier (Hip), Stephen Carr (Knee), Keith O'Neill(Was not called up, but has a double break in his leg), Mark Kennedy (Groin).

A night with Niall, update

A night with Niall, as it is called, will be a game that Sunderland A.F.C. will play on May 14th of this year. Their opponents will be the Republic of Ireland. Rather than aptly titling this a testimonial, it will be called a benefit game. And its Nialls way of saying thanks to the footballing world for blessing him with a fantastic rewardable career.

Due to recent club form, Black Cat fans have yet to dig deep into their pockets. Ticket sales and other contributions "have" reached the £500,000.00 GBP to date. However Niall wants the million, and right too.

Niall appeared on Tyne Tees television (North East regional ITV) on Friday 12 April 2002 with the following statement:

"This is my way of saying thanks, simple as that. Gillian (Mrs Quinn), and the kids have been made part of a huge family in the NorthEast. And although Ive had very memorable times with both Arsenal and Manchester City, the comraderie and lifestyle up here has been fantastic".

Niall also went on to say " I do not want to see plaques over doors of the beneficiaries reading, Niall Quinn Ward or Niall Quinn building. Instead I would like it to read, this project was created with the generousity of the Footballing supporters of both Sunderland A.F.C. and the Republic of Ireland. We are all responsible for the wonderful event. I was merely the catalyst".

The main beneficiaries of this fantastic event will be Sunderland Royal Infirmary for sick children, Sunderland-United Kingdom, and Our ladys Hospital for Sick Children, Crumlin, Dublin-Republic of Ireland.
